Diplomatic sources in Jordan say Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has sought US help with his plan to change the peace treaty signed with Egypt in 1979 “in response to the new circumstances and developments in the region.”
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Albawaba.com on Wednesday that Sharon discussed his envisaged plan with the Bush administration during his recent visit to Washington, telling them that the treaty with Cairo “does not fit as a model for peace with the Palestinians.”
According to the Arab diplomats, Sharon wants border areas with Egypt turned into “economic integration zones.” He demands also that the two sides establish joint tourist projects and free trade zones.
The amendments, recommends Sharon, should be annexed to the original treaty under the auspices of the US.
