Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, son of former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of corruption Sunday, state media reported.
Forty-five-year-old businessman Rafsanjani was charged for three separate corruption and security offenses by the Tehran Revolutionary Court that added to a total of 15 years. He has 20 days to appeal his sentence.
Rafsanjani's father served two terms as president from 1989 to 1997 and is a close friend of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
Reuters said media has reported Rafsanjani's previous arrests on corruption charges last year and in 2012.
