The Middle East conflict topped the agenda of talks between the European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday, reports said.
The president and his guest discussed ways to "lower the tension" in the region, AFP said.
Nicolas Kerleroux, Solana's spokesman, said the two leaders agreed to work on uprooting the "violence" in the region, in the process of Israeli-Palestinian political negotiations.
If not, their goal was to reduce the tension, at a minimum to “get the situation back to how it was before the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavem Zeevi."
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine killed Zeevi last week in retaliation for the assassination two months ago of its own leader.
The agency quoted Kerleroux as saying the two men "analyzed the situation and explained that they will work hard to lower the tension."
Israel has played down stinging US criticism ever since launching attacks that have killed tens and and wounded hundreds of Palestinians in the course of re-occupying six West Bank towns.
