The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, on Thursday denied there was an Egyptian-EU initiative to persuade the Palestinians and Israelis to return to the negotiating table, reported the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA.
“What's happening now is an attempt to implement what has been agreed upon [in terms of] initiatives, particularly the Mitchell committee report,” KUNA quoted him as telling Al Ahram newspaper.
He said the failure of this attempt might lead to the beginning of other attempts or the proposal of new ideas.
He said that failure would be the fate of any attempt to restore the issue to the United Nations, because at least one party did not want that to happen.
He asserted the importance of trying all possible means to halt the violence and return to the peace process.
Solana arrived in Egypt from Israel and the PA for talks aimed at halting almost one year of bloodshed in the Occupied Territories, in which over 700 people, the overwhelming majority of them Palestinan civilians, have been killed – Albawaba.com
