A cafe in an ethnic Albanian district of the Macedonian capital Skopje was destroyed overnight in an explosion but no one was injured, police said on Sunday.

The blast happened at around 3:00 am (0100 GMT) in the Cair district in the north of the capital.

Police believe the blast was caused by a petrol bomb which started the fire that gutted the cafe located in a shopping center.

The government crisis coordination center also reported a separate incident in the same district at about the same time, in which a device was thrown into the garden of an ethnic Albanian home but causing no damage or injuries.

About an hour earlier at the Butel commune on the outskirts of Skopje, another unidentified device exploded under a van owned by a textile company. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Several explosions, none of them causing causalities, have occurred in mainly-ethnic Albanian parts of Skopje in recent weeks -- SKOPJE (AFP)
