Gun battles between two Yemeni tribes sparked by a land dispute have resulted in the killings of six people and injuries to at least 16 others over the past two days, witnesses told AFP on Friday.

Armed members of the Kahlan al-Shuf and al-Meftah tribes in the province of Hijja, located some 125 kilometers northwest of Sanaa, started fighting on Wednesday, the witnesses said.

They were still firing shots and throwing grenades Friday afternoon, and local authorities were trying to get them to put down their weapons, a tribal source told AFP.

There are frequent deadly clashes in a country which has a tribal structure and in which the number of firearms is estimated to be more than 60 million -- more than three per habitant -- SANAA (AFP)
