Singapore will host some of the world’s greatest chefs at the World Gourmet Summit in April, hoping to attract epicureans from across the Middle East to taste a world of flavours.

Now in its 11th year, the World Gourmet Summit (WGS) is an annual celebration of the best of the culinary scene.

The Summit runs for three weeks and showcases over 70 food-based activities, including an international line-up of iconic master chefs; a spectacular Auguste Escoffier dinner; and a series of celebrity guests.

“Previously, the World Gourmet Summit has attracted visitors from the region to converge in Singapore and celebrate the fine cuisine and unique experiences delivered by dozens of first-rate chefs and culinary personalities,” said Dr Chan Tat Hon, Assistant Chief Executive (Leisure), Singapore Tourism Board.

“On average, 20 percent of diners at WGS 2006 were foreign visitors, with the majority from Malaysia, France, Australia, Philippines, India and Indonesia. The World Gourmet Summit profiles Singapore as an exclusive lifestyle destination, promoting premium tourism and distinctive experiences,” he continued.

High-end dining and shopping options are also seen as key attractions for bringing visitors from the Middle East to Singapore, particularly those looking for a luxury break in the Southeast Asian island.

The Summit boasts one of the strongest ever line-ups of gastronomy-embracing chefs, from the abstract to the traditional: “We have the classically trained chefs and the contemporary-experimental chefs. World Gourmet Summit could be said to be at the new peak of gastronomy,” said Peter Knipp, summit co-organiser.

As part of the campaign to raise awareness of the World Gourmet Summit in the region, the new restaurant at the Radisson SAS Hotel Dubai Media City, Chef’s House, is running the “Tasty Singapore Food Festival” until 22 March. The event features authentic Singaporean meals and desserts, and a gourmet set-menu dinner on the last night.

“Singapore is already recognised internationally as a food paradise and its diverse dining alternatives are of immense appeal to both leisure and business visitors. Events such as the World Gourmet Summit highlight our Uniquely Singapore destination experience through international culinary delights,” said Ke-Wei Peh, Area Director for the Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board.

Middle East residents wishing to visit the World Gourmet Summit should see www.worldgourmetsummit.com for further details.
