Supporters of Abu Nidal clashed with Lebanese troops in a Palestinian refugee camp on Wednesday, leaving three men dead, including one soldier, and 11 other people wounded, security officials and witnesses said.
The soldier, who belonged to an armoured vehicle transport unit, was hit in the forehead by a bullet fired from Palestinian fighters inside the camp, a Lebanese security source said Wednesday. The other two dead were Palestinians.
The clash erupted when troops entered the Jalil refugee camp, outside Baalbek, east Lebanon, at at 6:15 am (0315 GMT) in search of a wanted man, a security officer said, according to AP. Some 200 Palestinians, including women and children, gathered at the camp's main entrance, trying to escape the fighting.
The soldiers pulled down a wall of the offices of Fatah-Revolutionary Council, the group founded by Abu Nidal, who died mysteriously in Iraq some two weeks ago, the officer said.
In addition, the troops seized two truckloads of arms, the officer added. The shooting subsided after around two hours, but it flared up after the army blocked all approaches to the camp, which stands in the Bekaa Valley, some 100 kilometers east of Beirut. (Albawaba.com)
