Ship on way to Egypt from Saudi Arabia catches fire; one crewmember dies

One crewmember of the "Al-Salam" shipping carrier, which had caught fire on Saturday evening while on its way from the Diba port in the Saudi kingdom to the Safaja port in Egypt, died due to suffocation, according to an official source at the Saudi General Organization for Ports.  

 

The source said that, “At 6:30 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, the ship following its departure from Diba Port to Safaja port in Egypt caught fire, subsequently returned to its departure platform in Diba. It was carrying 896 passengers and 68 cars”.  

 

Immediately upon returning back to the Diba Port, “rescue teams, firemen and divers rushed to the ship and succeeded in rescuing all passengers, except one who died due to suffocation”.  

 

“Some of the passengers were taken to the Hospital for emergency treatment. The process of extinguishing the fire at the ship is still in progress”, the statement added, according to SPA. (Albawaba.com)
