The consumer electronics sector has emerged as a key growth industry in the Middle East, driven mainly by rising regional disposable incomes, a large product, and technology hungry expatriate population, and a burgeoning tourism industry according to Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade. As part of her keynote address, HE Sheikha Lubna said: “The Gulf’s consumer electronics industry is predicted to achieve a 30 per cent growth in 2008 to AED 18.35 billion, representing a significant 17 per cent share of the expected AED 105.7 billion global market.”

HE Sheikha Lubna noted that the Middle East’s consumer electronics sector is expected to experience even more growth as consumers in general continue to rapidly adopt mobile and modern technologies for personal use and seek better designs and added product features. “My own country, the UAE, currently leads the region’s broader consumer electronics and household appliance sector, which is expected to achieve double-digit annual growth towards 2010 mainly due to rising demand for new convergence products and networked household appliances,” she stated.

International CES/hometech features dedicated Home Networking and Automation Zones, in anticipation of the growth of households using data networking solutions throughout the world to almost 145 million by 2011.

Sheikha Lubna underlined automated home technology as one of the fastest-growing sectors of the consumer electronics industry that is strongly patronized particularly in Dubai, where many high-profile land developments are being fitted with ready-to-use built-in wireless communications systems.
