Sheikh Saud hands over proceeds from RAK Terry Fox Run to UAE University

Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, handed over the proceeds from the first annual RAK Terry Fox Run to the UAE University in Al Ain in the presence of Kris Panday, Canadian Consul General in Dubai, at a function held at the Al Dhait Palace here today.
Sheikh Saud handed over a cheque for AED 65,255, which was collected at the RAK Terry Fox Run held on March 5, 2010, to Dr. Charles Leduc, Associate Professor at the UAE University in Al Ain, to support the cancer research projects currently underway in the University.
Sheikh Saud appreciated the RAK Terry Fox Run organizing committee and the participants of the event for supporting cancer research in the UAE. “It is only through research that we will be able to conquer the disease and it is glad to see that people are coming forward to support humanity's collective fight against cancer,” he said.
The Consul General thanked Sheikh Saud for his support in making the first RAK Terry Fox Run a success. “The level of public participation in the event was very impressive and I hope that in the coming years the event would attract more people and become a bigger success,” Kris Panday added.
Dr. Charles Leduc, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAE University in Al Ain, said that the cancer research projects going on at the UAE University were truly world-class. “We have had over 75 research papers published in world’s leading medical journals including The Lancet. The research projects funded by the Terry Fox Runs are all focused on cancer treatment and specific runs held in the UAE funds specific research projects,” Dr Leduc added.
As many as 600 people had participated in the first RAK Terry Fox Run.
Sheikh Abdul Malik bin Kayed Al Qasimi, Advisor to the RAK Ruler, Sheikh Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of RAK Civil Aviation, and members of the RAK Terry Fox Run organizing committee were present on the occasion.
