The son of Israeli Prime Minster Ariel Sharon was sentenced on Tuesday to nine months in jail by the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court for violating political fundraising laws and providing false testimony.

Omri Sharon was convicted of offenses related to illegal fundraising during his father's 1999 Likud primaries campaign, according to Ynet.

Omri told the judges, "1999 was one of the most difficult years in my life. It was the year my mother discovered she had cancer…I made severe mistakes and I'm sorry about that. I took responsibility for my acts and I hope the court will take my comments into account when it sentences me."

Israel's State Prosecutor's Office attorneys asked that Omri be imprisoned despite his father's current condition.

The Israeli Prime Minister has been in a coma after suffering heart complications since the first week in January.
