Palestinian Minister of Planning Nabil Shaath said Saturday the constitution of a future Palestinian state would be drafted soon, the Ramallah-based daily Al Ayyam reported.
Shaath, also the chief of Palestinian constitution committee, noted that it is working on the final touches of the first Palestinian constitution draft.
The first-ever Palestinian constitution, composed of 220 provisions, would be covering all life aspects of the Palestinian people, with two major provisions related to the borders of the state and the problem of the Palestinian refugees, he conveyed.
"This Palestinian constitution is based to a great extent on the major Palestinian system or law," Shaath said, adding "provisions related to freedoms, separation between the authorities, the rule of law, economic system, general duties and women's rights are all included in the new constitution."
One of the major provisions is considering Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state, the minister said. Before being approved, the constitution will go through a public referendum and discussion of the Central Council (PCC) of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
"I would expect the referendum to be held together with the Palestinian presidential and parliamentarian elections," said Shaath. (Albawaba.com)
