A senior Fatah leader on Wednesday visited the Gaza Strip for the first time since the territory was seized by Hamas in June 2007. According to the AP, Nabil Shaath, a Gaza native, said Wednesday that his three-day visit is aimed at improving the atmosphere between the two factions.

Shaath handed his passport to Hamas border guards for registration, in a symbolic recognition of Hamas authority. Shaath stated the trip has the blessing of Fatah leader, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Shaath intends to meet Hamas leaders, but stressed he won't start reconciliation talks while in the coastal territory.
