A senior aide to Israel's Public Security Minister Avi Dichter was shot and moderately injured on Friday morning by a Palestinian sniper near the Gaza Strip. Dichter, who was present at the time of the attack, was not hurt.
According to Haaretz, Dichter's bureau chief, Matti Gil, sustained injuries from the gunfire while he and the minister were touring an observation point overlooking the Gaza Strip. Gil was evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Israel Radio said Dichter and his aide were touring the area with a group of Canadian Jews on Friday to familiarize them with the situation in Israeli communities bordering the Strip. A member of the group told Israel Radio that while Dichter was speaking, a volley of gunfire burst forth for about 30 seconds, wounding Gil.
