Second and last day of Syrian parliamentary elections

Syrians voted for a second day Monday in parliamentary elections that have been marred by an apparent low turnout. State newspapers claimed there was "massive participation" and "fierce competition" in Sunday's polling, the first of the two-day election, but they provided no figures for voter turnout.

The opposition called for a boycott, saying the results were known in advance, and that Syria needed an election law that provided for free and fair polling.

Results from the voting are not expected before Wednesday.

Vice President Najah al-Attar participated in the parliamentary elections, saying "voting is a national duty and everyone should practice this right with full credibility and transparency."

"Voting is a practice of the individual's freedom to select those who will represent him or her… so everybody should best select his/her candidate to the People's assembly," Dr. Attar said in a statement to SANA news agency while voting.
