The UK security unit Scotland Yard has arrested fugitive and alleged terrorist Yasser Al Sirri, who is accused of attempting to assassinate former Egyptian prime minister Atef Sudqi, the daily Al Gomhuria reported.

Sirri was the spokesman for the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement and was sentenced to death in absentia by the Egyptian government for his alleged role in an assassination attempt. He was transferred Tuesday to Padington Green in London.

Earlier, the British police stormed Sirri’s residence and then inspected the media center he managed in London where they seized documents allegedly proving his link with terrorist organizations in many places.

It is not yet been known whether the suspect will be tried in Britain or handed over for trial in Egypt.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said in an interview with the Newsweek last week that he had raised the issue of suspected Egyptian terrorists finding haven in the UK during a discussion with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Blair reportedly said that UK law did not provide for the extradition of asylum seekers – Albawaba.com
