A train derailed in Egypt as it was traveling north toward Cairo on Thursday, overturning two of its cars and leaving at least 69 people injured, Associated Press reported
Egypt's state-run news agency quoted Gamal al-Gohari as saying that the accident happened early in the morning near the southern city of Beni Suef. According to Middle East News Agency, the train hit a cement wall while trying to avoid another train heading in the opposite direction.
MENA quoted an unidentified security official as saying that the train's conductor had been arrested.
Egypt suffers from chronic transportation problems, with railway accidents frequently occurring due to negligence.
The country's worst railroad accident was in February 2002, when a train caught fire and left 363 people dead.
