Saudi police have detained a group of "terrorists," who had readied a huge cache of arms to launch attacks in the kingdom, the interior ministry revealed.

"The security services seized a large stash of weapons, explosives and munitions in Riyadh Tuesday which were intended to carry out acts of terrorism," said a ministry statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

It said the haul included 55 hand grenades, 377 kilograms of explosive, and 2,545 bullets of different calibres. Saudi television showed large metal containers of what appeared to be explosive material as well as handbags stuffed with grenades. It also displayed passports and identity cards as well as a bag full of disguises, including colorful wigs.

The ministry announced the detention of "19 terrorists, 17 of them Saudis," adding that further arrests had also been made but would only be announced later. The two non-Saudis whose arrests were detailed were a Yemeni and an Iraqi with joint Kuwaiti-Canadian nationality.
