According to Saudi officials, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned after four children died from poisoning while on pilgrammage in the city of Mashhad while on pilgrimage, Reuters reports.

Saudi foreign ministry spokesman Osama Naqli made the announcement on Tuesday.

Thirty-three Saudi pilgrims from al-Qatif travelled to Iran, only to fall ill from alleged gas poisoning in a hotel 48 hours after arriving in Masshad. Four children died and 18 others are in critical condition.

Iranian Minister of Health, Hassan Hashemi, declared that poisoning was an accident due a fummigation treatment in the hotel.

He also noted that the poisoned Saudi pilgrims received immediate and adequate treatment in hospitals in the holy city of Mashhad in Khorassan Razavi Province.
