An official source at the Saudi Interior Ministry stated Friday that two cars attempted to drive through a back gate of Buqayq industrial refineries. Presuming them as suspect cars, Saudi security agents fired on them, leading to a huge blast near the entrance of the facility. The incident resulted in a minor fire which was immediately controlled and there was no effect on the production operations.

According to SPA, two Saudi security men were severely injured during this incident.

On his part, the Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi has stated that Saudi security agencies and Saudi Aramco employees foiled a "terrorist" attack. He added that production continues at full capacity and all export operations are continuing as usual.

Buqayq is a small city in the interior of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia located in the desert southwest of the Dhahran-Dammam-Khobar metropolitan area. Built in the 1940s by the national oil company Saudi Aramco, Buqayq is predominantly an industrial oil-company town with a population of few thousands, about half of whom are North Americans.

The city was built near Buqayq oil field, which is one of the largest and most productive in the kingdom.
