Russian radars detected two ballistic "objects" fired towards the eastern Mediterranean from the central part of the sea on Tuesday, Russain state news agency RIA reported.
RIA quoted the Defence Ministry as saying its early warning missile system had detected the launch of two missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea, according to Reuters.
The Defence Ministry declined immediate comment to Reuters. A ministry official had earlier criticized the United States for deploying warships in the Mediterranean close to Syria.
The launches took place at 10:16 am Moscow time (0616 GMT) and were detected by the early warning system in Armavir in southern Russia, accordind to Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed of the launch by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu amid growing expectations of a US-led military strike, to be launched from the Mediterranean, on Syrian targets.
