According to the AFP, Russian cargo planes dropped 37.5 tons of food aid in the town of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria on Thursday, the first of a 90-ton plan to get aid into the city.

The oil-rich city, under Daesh control since 2013, has a population of more than 200,000 residents, 70 per cent of whom are women and children.

The UN said in January that nearly a half million people are currently living under siege in the embattled country and 260,000 have been displaced since March 2011, AFP reported.
