Russia has introduced a drastic 40-percent cut in China's fishing quota for 2001 in the Sea of Okhotsk in a bid to regulate fishing in its far east waters, Interfax cited official sources saying Sunday.
Moscow would only allow China to catch 9,500 tons of Alaska pollack in the Sea of Okhotsk in 2001, a senior official at the state fisheries committee told the news agency.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission for Cooperation in Fishing held in Beijing last week, Sergei Smirnov said.
The commission drafted a plan for the two countries jointly to monitor fishing in the rivers Amur and Ussuri, Interfax cited Smirnov saying -- MOSCOW (AFP)
