Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab has been removed from office, announced Monday the official Syrian television. But according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) he defected and left Syria to Jordan. "Riad Hijab was dismissed as prime minister," said a banner on the Syrian television.

"He fled Syria," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the SOHR.

Former Minister of Agriculture, he was appointed in June 2012 by President Bashar al-Assad as the head of the government, following parliamentary elections, which were boycotted by the opposition.
