Sudanese opposition leader, Mohammad Osman Mirghani, intends to return back to the country in the near future, the Arabic daily Akhbar al-Yawm said Monday.
Sources told the daily that Mirghani, head of the National Democratic Alliance, will not join a dialogue with the government following his return back to Khartoum as did the chairman of the Ummah party, Sadeq al-Mahdi.
Mirghani held a meeting with Sudanese President Omar Bashir in Asmara in September 2000 to explore ways to end the 17-year-civil war, reported AFP.
No breakthrough was reported after Bashir and Mirghani held the meeting, the first since Bashir seized power in a 1989 military coup backed by Islamic fundamentalists.
During the meeting, Mirghani asked for the repeal of laws restricting public freedom and political activities before starting negotiations with the government to reach a peaceful solution to end the conflict between the government and the opposition, said AFP.
The meeting in Asmara was the result of mediation by the Eritrean government, said AFP -- Albawaba.com
