Saudi Arabia has embarked on a strategic review that consists of acquiring nuclear weapons, according to a report in the British Guardian on Thursday.

According to the newspaper report, a strategy paper being considered in the highest-ranking circles in Riyadh sets out three different options.

The first option, according to the paper, is to "acquire a nuclear capability as a deterrent", the other to "maintain or enter into an alliance with an existing nuclear power that would offer protection", and the third, to "try to reach a regional agreement on having a nuclear-free Middle East".

The report added that it is unknown whether the Kingdom has taken a decision on any of the three options, however, according to the report, the "fact that it is prepared to contemplate the nuclear option is a worrying development". (Albawaba.com)
