European diplomatic sources have predicted the Obama administration will announce in the coming weeks a package of measures to reduce the economic and trade sanctions imposed by the former administration of President George W. Bush on Syria. These sources noted that relations between the two countries will witness a major breakthrough during the next few weeks.
They told the UAE-based "Al-Khaleej" newspaper the U.S. Administration has become aware of the importance of the regional role played by Syria and the importance of US-Syrian cooperation in certain files such as Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon.
The report pointed out that the appointment of a new U.S. ambassador to Damascus after a lull of more than seven years, reflects the new direction of relations between Washingtonand Damascus. The same sources emphasized that Washington conveyed Damascus through diplomatic channels its condemnation of the Israeli foreign minister's recent remarks Israeli extremist in which he threatened to topple the Syrian regime.
"This does not mean that the political differences between Washington and Damascus have been resolved, but means that the two capitals have decided to adopt a dialogue to resolve differences," the sources were quoted as saying.
