Israel Radio reported Thursday that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon by phone Wednesday in an effort to shore up the ceasefire.

Mubarak has repeatedly rejected the idea of making any personal contact with Sharon, following the latter’s threats to strike Egypt upon his victory in the February elections.

According to the radio report, Mubarak urged Sharon to maintain the ceasefire and to begin discussing diplomatic measures with the Palestinians.

Mubarak also spoke to US President George Bush on Wednesday as part of a round of telephone diplomacy aimed at salvaging the ceasefire – Albawaba.com
