A fire that killed 50 people in a Moroccan jail earlier this month may have been started deliberately as an act of vengeance by an inmate, legal sources said on Monday.

The blaze, said to be the worst ever in Morocco’s jails, may have been started in an act of revenge following a dispute between homosexual lovers, according to a report by police investigators disclosed to AFP

However, it could also have been started when a badly extinguished cigarette set a foam mattress alight, said the report on the deadly fire that raged on November 1 through Sidi Moussa Prison, on the outskirts of the coastal town of El Jadida.

Additionally, the report said six of the victims died in the cell where the fire began and the 44 others died in adjacent cells "because of smoke and because of delay by rescuers in opening their doors". (Albawaba.com)
