Iranian President-elect Mahmoud Ahmedinejad wants to meet representatives from the Iranian Jewish community living in Los Angeles, according to Israeli diplomatic sources.
According to a report carried by the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli consul-general in Los Angeles Ehud Danookh had conveyed a message to this effect to the Israeli ministry of foreign affairs.
Officials at the Israeli foreign ministry were "surprised" by this Iranian request, the newspaper reported.
The Iranian president is keen on attending the meetings of the UN General Assembly in New York, scheduled to be held on September 15. The daily said the Iranian envoy to the UN approached two leaders in the Iranian Jewish community in the US and invited them to meet Ahmedinejad.
