Iran has called on Egypt and Syria to stop Israel's war on the Palestinians, reported the Middle East Newsline (MENL) this week.
The report said that Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi called on his Syrian and Egyptian counterparts to adopt what he termed "urgent and effective mechanisms" to stop Israeli attacks on the Palestinian Authority. Kharazi did not elaborate.
There have been reports that Israel is ready with a plan to wipe out the PA and overthrow Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned against any Israeli move to eliminate Arafat, only days before a Jane’s Intelligence Group unit disclosed information that more than 40,000 Palestinian security personnel might be killed or deported in a mass offensive against the Palestinian lands drawn up by Israel's chief of staff, Shaul Mofaz.
Sources said that Mubarak had received intelligence reports confirming the Israeli plan.
Iran does not recognize Israel's right to exist and has increased its support for Lebanon's Hizbollah resistance movement, as well as to the Palestinians in their latest uprising against 34 years of military occupation.
Kharazi discussed the escalating conflict between Israel and the PA with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Al Shara, said MENL.
Kharazi, in a phone conversation with his counterparts on Wednesday, called the regional situation tense and urged for an Arab and Islamic effort against Israel.
"The European Union and the United Nations Security Council take this sensitive issue seriously," Kharazi was quoted as telling the foreign ministers by the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) – Albawaba.com
