Opposition sources said Wednesday that an Iranian diplomat was assassinated in Damascus. No further details were available.
Meanwhile, gunfire and explosions were heard Tuesday night in several neighborhoods of Damascus.
Early Wednesday, an explosion and gunfire were heard in Baghdad street and in Bab Touma, the Christian quarter of the capital, according to the Local Coordination committees (LCC). According to the LCC, the area of Tadamoun, in the south of the capital, was targeted by mortar fire early Wednesday morning.
"Until late Tuesday night, sounds of explosions and gunfire were heard intermittently in several neighborhoods, including Kafar Sousse (south)," said an AFP journalist .
Limited clashes were resumed Monday in Damascus including Kafar Sousse after a rebel attack which included RPG rocket firing against an army checkpoint.
The front of Damascus had calmed down after the army had retaken control after a week of clashes in the capital.
The battle has concentrated since July 20 in Aleppo, the second city of the country, to which the regime and rebels sent fresh reinforcements "for a decisive battle that would last for weeks," said a Syrian security source.
The source said the army surrounded and bombarded the rebel districts, but it will take some time before launching the decisive assault.
The first army offensive on July 28 was launched against the district of Salaheddin, the main rebel stronghold in the south-west of Aleppo, which was repelled by the insurgents.
On Tuesday, 154 people - including 35 civilians, 62 soldiers and 27 rebels - were killed in violence across the country. Half of them in Aleppo, according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR).
