Turkey is defying a 1987 agreement by denying Syria access to its agreed upon quota of water from the Euphrates River, Syrian sources said on Friday.
According to the agreement, Ankara should provide Syria with 500 cubic meters per second.
But Syrian sources told the Daily Star newspaper that since early April, Turkey has only been allowing Syria 300 cubic meters.
Other estimates put the amount of water Syria is receiving from the Euphrates at no more than 395 cubic meters per second.
Sources in Damascus have been reluctant to discuss the issue in detail and are avoiding making public complaints in the media.
According to the London-based Al Hayat newspaper, Damascus is trying to avoid “political escalation” over water, which has been a point of friction between the two countries in the past – Albawaba.com
