An extremist group and its allies in Syria seized a border crossing in southwest Syria near Israel on Thursday, Reuters reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the group Ahrar al-Sham took the crossing over from a group of rival militants. If confirmed the capture would show an advance from one of the major extremist groups in Syria after Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

The group has been active in an alliance among rival groups taking territory from the government in the past few weeks, according to Reuters, showing a presence after its senior leadership had been wiped out by Daesh and the Syrian regime.
