The western Iranian city of Kermanshah, close to the border with Iraq, was hit by five mortar shells overnight, state radio reported Thursday.

It said the shells hit a "vacant plot" in the city and that there had been neither casualties nor damage. Two people were arrested in connection with the attack, the radio said without giving further details.

Late last month Iran announced that "agents" had been arrested after mortar attacks which the state news agency IRNA said fell harmlessly near a park and sports complex in Tehran.

Iran's main armed opposition group, the Iraq-based People's Mujahedeen, told AFP in Nicosia that the attack had targeted a security headquarters in Tehran leaving casualties and damage.

The Mujahadeen said in Baghdad on Tuesday that one of its camps in Iraq came under rocket attack by Iranian "agents," although the rockets fell on a surrounding residential area – TEHRAN (AFP)
