Direct flights between Qatar and Italy will begin this summer, with Qatar Airways, Gulf Air and Alitalia scheduling operations between Doha and Milan in July, Italian Ambassador to Qatar Pio Luigi Teodarani Fabbri said Friday.

He said an agreement for cooperation in civil aviation had already been reached between Qatar and Italy in January, the Gulf Times newspaper reported on Saturday.

The Rome-Doha sector may be linked by the three carriers later.

Sources said the agreement gives the right to Gulf Air and Qatar Airways, both national carriers, to operate a total of seven weekly flights from Doha either to Milan or Rome.

Similarly, Alitalia can fly seven services from either of the two airports to Doha.

Some of the seven flights could be purely for cargo, they said. Though the passenger services are limited to to or from Rome or Milan, the cargo services could be to or from any point in Italy to Doha.

Asked whether direct flights between Doha and the Italian cities were viable, Fabbri said: “Yes.” – Albawaba.com
