A task force comprising senior officials of the ministries of public health and municipal affairs has been formed to coordinate the malaria eradication program in Qatar, reported the Gulf Times newspaper on Thursday.

The taskforce will meet regularly and take stock of the situation, sources said.

The taskforce was formed following the detection of several malaria cases in Qatar since 1999.

In the first three months of this year, as many as 18 malaria cases were detected, said the sources.

The taskforce, which met Wednesday, decided to set up a hotline and raise a round-the-clock vigil against malaria.

A survey of the larvae-infected areas will be carried out soon, said the paper, adding that all farms and water reservoirs will come under special scrutiny.

The World Health Organization has already offered to help Qatar in the malaria eradication program, said the paper – Albawaba.com
