An Iraqi militant group linked to al-Qaeda claimed responsibility on Wednesday for attacks that killed dozens of people across the country the day before, AP reported.

According to the news agency, al-Qaeda's Iraqi branch, the Islamic State of Iraq, posted a statement on their website claiming responsibility for Tuesday's string of bombings, which killed a reported total of 65.

The group said that Tuesday's attacks were in revenge for the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons.

The al-Qaida statement reportedly warned the Shia-led government to stop executing Sunni prisoners or "expect more bad events ... and seas of blood."

Iraq has been hit by a wave of sectarian violence in recent months following the pullout of American troops. The country's Sunni minority claim they are being unfairly targeted by the Shia-led government's new anti-terror legislation.
