Commenting on Syrian progress during the disarmament, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he thought the Syrian government was “very actively” cooperating with the UN team of 100 working through each site.
"The Syrian leadership has very actively joined this work and is acting in a transparent manner, helping international agencies," stated Putin as reported by Russia’s state RIA Novosti news on Tuesday.
The OPCW and the UN have had to quickly gather a team of chemical weapons experts after a Security Council resolution endorsed a Russian-US disarmament plan on September 27. The plan aims todestroy Syria’s huge chemical weapons arsenal estimated at 1,000 tons, by mid-2014.
The plan was launched after a chemical weapons attack near Damascus on August 21, in which hundreds - Washington claims around 1,400 - people died.
