Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu arrived in Russia Tuesday to discuss the volatile situation in the Middle East with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin said at the start of the talks he expects their discussions to focus on Syria but he failed to mention Russia's planned sale of S-300 anti-aircraft systems to the war-torn nation, RIA Novosti reported.
A high-ranking source in Jerusalem told the official Russian news agency Netanyahu is likely to ask Putin not to follow through with the sale.
Syria has already made the first payment on a $900 million deal for six launchers and some 144 missiles, Haaretz reported.
Before leaving for Russia, Netanyahu said he is interested in discussing ways of making the Middle East more secure and stable
with Putin.
Also on the agenda will be a discussion of Iran's nuclear program.
