The meeting is seen as a significant stride towards normalization and recognition of Israel by the Libyan government, which had long maintained a staunch refusal to engage with or acknowledge Israel in any form.

ALBAWABA- Demonstrations have flared up in Libya as the country's Foreign Minister, Raja'a al-Mangoush, held a meeting with her Israeli counterpart, Eli Cohen, in Rome.

In the city of Zawiya, protestors burned the Israeli flag to voice their opposition against the diplomatic engagement. Similarly, in Tajoura, to the east of Tripoli, demonstrators blocked a main street in protest, rejecting the meeting between the Libyan Foreign Minister and her Israeli counterpart.

Khaled Al-Mishri, former head of the Libyan State Council, expressed strong condemnation of the meeting, asserting that the current government has overstepped religious, national, and legal boundaries. Al-Mishri emphasized that such actions warrant the overthrow of the government.

This development comes after Israel disclosed a previously undisclosed "historic secret meeting" between Eli Cohen and Raja’a al-Mangoush in Rome.

Cohen described the meeting as a crucial initial step in enhancing relations between Israel and Libya. Highlighting Libya's substantial size and strategic position, Cohen stressed the substantial importance and promising potential of these newly formed ties.
