Prominent Egyptian cleric Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s Sunni organization told Egyptians not to respond to Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s call for pro-military demonstrations, reported AFP.
The statement came in a fatwa on Wednesday, and declared that Egyptians are “prohibited from responding to any call leading to civil war or covering up of violence against any party, or inciting sedition.”
Al-Sisi’s request, three weeks after the ouster of Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi, called for demonstrations to coincide with protests that have been planned for Friday by supporters of the deposed president.
Some Islamists in Egypt called Al-Sisi’s televised request an open call to “civil war.”
Qaradawi is Qatari but was born in Egypt. His Doha-based group urged Egyptians to “preserve the peaceful nature of their protests, and to be patient under all conditions,” AFP reported.
