The second-in-command of Iraq's main Shiite Muslim group, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, rejected attacks on US soldiers and called instead for "peaceful" resistance, in a newspaper interview published on Wednesday.
"We do not allow such actions. There is no fatwa (religious edict) from the ulema of Iraq authorizing such attacks, because they cause too many problems," Hakim told the London-based Al-Hayat.
The Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) official said his group "wanted to end the occupation peacefully", saying "the resistance must be peaceful and take on different forms depending on the circumstances".
Moreover, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim said Iran "does not interfere in the affairs of SAIRI", which was Tehran-based before the regime of Saddam Hussein was overthrown in April by a US-led invasion. (Albawaba.com)
