Eight Islamic militants and a soldier were killed in two days of unrest this week in Algeria, newspapers reported Wednesday.

Four Islamists, including an Islamic leader known as Abou Khaoula, were killed Tuesday by security forces in the eastern Setif region, the newspaper El Watan said.

Security forces seized weapons and ammunition during the operation, the paper said.

Pro-government forces also killed four other Islamists the same day in Ain Defla, some 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of the capital.

Meanwhile, a young soldier was killed by an unknown assailant early Monday in Tizi Ouzou in northeastern Algeria, Le Matin and Liberte reported.

Security forces clashed with an armed group in the town on Monday night, but no victims were reported and the group fled, Le Matin added.

Algeria's civil war has claimed at least 150,000 lives since 1992, when the army cancelled elections that the now outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was certain to win -- Algiers, (AFP)
