None of the seven candidates in Iran's presidential election won 50% of the votes, paving the way for the first presidential runoff in the country's history, a government official said Saturday. Hopeful Hashemi Rafsanjani took the lead by getting eight million and 426,968 votes in the day first of the vote counting on Saturday.
Former parliament speaker Mahdi Karrobi stood at the second place with 20.1 percent of the votes followed by Tehran Mayor Mahmud Ahmadinejad with 17 per cent, according to the latest counting conducted by computer.
Former minister of higher education Mostafa Moin gained 14.1 per cent of the votes counted in 175 townships, from a total of 326, the supervisory board of presidential candidacy said early Saturday.
