Preparations are underway for joint Oman-Britain military exercises in October, a British Embassy spokesman told the Gulf News on Monday.

He said the main purpose of this week's visit to Oman by Air Chief Marshal Peter Squire, the chief of air staff of the British Royal Air Force, was to review preparations for the second joint exercise - the first in 15 years - between the two friendly countries.

"The visit went extremely well and [Squire] returned home fully satisfied with its outcome," said the spokesman.

He added that both sides were making every effort to ensure the complete success of the exercise, dubbed Al Saif Al Sarie, in which all the wings of the armed forces will take part.

He said details of the exercise, conceived more than two years ago, were finalised last November when British Defence Secretary Geoffrey Hoon visited Oman and held in-depth discussions with his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Soud bin Hareb – Albawaba.com
