ALBAWABA - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA, posted on X announcing the beginning of the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip.
UNRWA posted multiple pictures of kids in Gaza receiving the vaccine from Nuseirat on Sunday morning.
It wrote: "The vaccination campaign has begun in the Gaza middle area, where over 200 of our teams are administrating vaccines in 28 @UNRWA health facilities and going tent to tent"
Hamas and the Israeli government agreed on a temporary pause in fighting in the area where polio vaccines are being distributed.
According to sources, an agreement was reached to pause the fighting for three days in central Gaza between 06:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. local time to allow kids to get vaccines. After three days, the vaccines will start in another area in the Gaza Strip and a pause in fighting will be held there.
UNRWA further noted that the vaccination campaign in the middle area of Gaza began today for 156,000 children and after that more children in the south and north will get the vaccines.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, posted on his official account on X saying: "1st phase of the polio campaign kicks off in the middle areas." He added: "This is a race against time to reach just over 600,000 children across the Gaza Strip in the coming days."
He further requested the two parties to respect the agreement regarding the pause in fighting during the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza.
