Belgian prosecutors said Tuesday that an operation was underway at a shopping center in central Brussels following a bomb alert, AFP reported.
Prosecutors told Belga News that one suspect had been arrested. Prime Minister Charles Michel is reportedly holding an emergency meeting with members of the security cabinet.
At about 6:30 am local time (0430 GMT) reports of a man acting suspiciously at the City 2 shopping center triggered a bomb alert. A bomb squad was deployed to the mall.
Soldiers were checking passengers' bags as they boarded the nearby Rogier metro station, the only remaining open exit from the shopping center.
Belgium is still reeling from the suicide bombings carried out by Daesh at Brussels airport and at the city's metro on March 22, which left 32 people dead and injured hundreds more.
Belgium has been the center of ongoing investigations into militant cells operating in Europe. It has produced the highest number per capita of foreign fighters in the EU who have then traveled to Iraq and Syria to fight.
