Jordan official denied on Monday a press report that six family members had been treated in the northern Irbid Governorate after eating poisoned watermelons, the Jordan Times reported Tuesday.

Abdul Rahman Tbeishat of the Irbid Health Directorate was quoted by the daily as saying that “the report is not true, and I don’t know where some [local] newspapers got the information from.”

He added that if there was any sort of chemical substance in watermelons, people would notice a clear difference in color and smell before eating them.

Mohammad Zanati, head of the health center mentioned in the story, said his facility had not admitted any food poisoning victims, or even people with bad diarrhea, since early 2001, whether due to poisoned watermelons or other food – Albawaba.com
